La Fortuna Budget Luxury Stay: Almendros Eco-Villas

When planning a trip to Costa Rica, I decided that the largest portion of the trip would be spent in La Fortuna which meant I needed to prioritize where we would be laying our heads at night. I was looking for a unique and comfortable stay that would not break the bank. During my search I found Almendros Eco-Villas and was instantly hooked.

About Almendros Eco-Villas

Almendros Eco-Villas is fairly small estate with multiple villas on property. The villas range in size and can fit groups of 2 to 10 people. Therefore, when booking a stay here, you are essentially booking your own private tiny home. This made for such a peaceful and unique lodging experience that I loved.

La Fortuna Lodging On A Budget – Almendros Eco-Villas Price

Immediately, I was drawn to the Almendros Eco-Villas because of the low cost. Stays range from around 35 dollars a night to 120 dollars a night depending on how many people you have and how much room you need. I booked one of the villas fit for 2 people, and each night averaged about $65.

Almendros Eco-Villas Amenities

At the center of the property, is a nice pool that I did not get the chance to use due to my own tight schedule. It did look pretty inviting though. Each villa also has their own parking space. I would definitely advise using as few cars as possible.

Other than that each villa differs from the other in terms of amenities. For example, my villa had its own outdoor kitchen which we used daily to cook breakfast and make coffee. It also had an air conditioning unit and a fan which was necessary.

I noticed some other villas had hammocks, closed in patios, a pool table, a larger kitchen, a private pool, and more. Therefore, just look into each villa’s amenities to find your best fit!

Almendros Eco-Villas Staff

Each staff member I spoke with seemed to only speak Spanish, so that is important to keep in mind when planning your stay. This was not really an issue as there was little need for communication, and using Google Translate worked just fine when necessary. The staff was all super friendly and responded to each request promptly.

Almendros Eco-Villas Safety

I felt completely safe during my stay at Almendros Eco-Villas. The property is gated and requires a code to get in. The villa had locks on the doors and windows, and the property was fairly secluded. Nothing of concern happened while I was there.

What Is Near Almendros Eco-Villas

To get to La Fortuna and all your planned activities from the villas, you will have to drive. Therefore, I would only recommend this stay if you have a car.

  • La Fortuna – 18 minutes
  • Arenal Volcano – 30 minutes
  • Hot Springs – 20-35 minutes
    • Free Hot Springs – 33 minutes
  • Fortuna Waterfall – 23 minutes

Bonus: Wildlife Near Almendros Eco-Villas

During my stay at the villas, I spent a lot of time outside on the patio. While outside, I spotted several types of birds, a giant orange iguana, and even a sloth! This was so cool especially since I did not book a sloth spotting tour during my time in Costa Rica. I fully did not expect to see one since I know they are a bit hard to find. The wildlife that finds its way onto the property was probably my favorite part of my stay here. It made for such a great experience to have while sipping on my yummy Costa Rican coffee.

Almendros Eco-Villas Pros and Cons

Pros: Low Cost, Beautiful Property, Friendly Staff, Amazing Amenities, Safe

Cons: Not At The Center Of La Fortuna, Limited Parking, Can Be A Little Noisy Due To Construction Or Nearby Residents

Overall Rating: 8.5/10

Final Thoughts

After a few days, the villas started to feel like a home I did not want to leave. Each night I had a great sleep and would then step out onto the patio immediately after waking up in the morning. Brewing a coffee and making breakfast in the outdoor kitchen was the best way to start the day. I would easily stay here again as it became my little slice of paradise on the trip.

Spotting all that wildlife while sitting on the patio sipping coffee is a dream! Sounds like these eco-villas are a great option for travelers who have a car and want something a bit quieter and natural than you’d find in the city center.

Almendros Eco Villas sound amazing! I love the idea of cooking breakfast outdoors. I’ve been to this area of Costa Rico before and the resorts are crazy expensive. The villas are the perfect alternative. I love that you were able to see a sloth! That’s something I’ve always wanted to see.

I almost went to Costa Rica a few years ago. I still want to go because every corner the country is so beautiful. I’ve heard wonderful things about La Forfuna. Where you stayed was so beautiful!
