5 Things You Should NOT Do In Times Square

Times Square is arguably one of the most exciting and aggravating parts of anyone’s trip to New York City. It’s easy to get drawn in by the big lights and the hustle & bustle of the square, but if you want to have the best experience possible, there are some things you should avoid. Specifically, these are 5 things to not do in Times Square:

1. Don’t Stop and Watch A Times Square Performance That You Wouldn’t Want to Participate In

Throughout Times Square, there are several street performers, and while they are very talented, most of them also rely heavily on audience participation. This means it’s likely that at any point, they might try to pull you into the show, and it can be hard to get yourself out of that situation. For instance, if you’re tall, it is possible that performers are going to pull you in for a stunt where they jump over you, but not before they make you do some silly dances in front of a crowd. If this sounds awful to you, then maybe try not to stop for the street performers or at least try to just blend in with the crowd.

2. Don’t Take Pictures With People In Costume In Times Square Unless You’re Willing To Pay

I don’t know how enticing it is to get a picture with raggedy Mickey Mouse, but if you can be tempted to do so, be aware that it will come with a price.

3. Don’t Suddenly Come To A Halt In Times Square

Times Square is one of the fastest-moving places in all of New York City, which means you can’t just suddenly stop walking when you see something that grabs your attention. Not only is the square full of tourists, but some locals may include this part of the city in their route to and from work, and you will want to get out of their way.

4. Don’t Walk Around Times Square With Full Pockets Or A Bag On Your Back

Times Square is known for having a lot of pick-pocketers, and I know it’s nearly impossible to travel without carrying some valuables such as your wallet. To keep your belongings as safe as possible, keep them in a bag that you carry on the front of your body or even your front pocket. Backpacks and back pockets are much easier to steal out of since they’re out of your sight. Thankfully, I’ve never had any of my things stolen while in New York, so hopefully, you’ll be in the clear as well!

5. Don’t Go Back To Times Square Once You’ve Had The Experience

With the time that you have in NYC, trust me when I say you will want to spend the least amount of it in Times Square. With so much else to do in the city, there is no need to go to Times Square more than once, so while you’re there, go ahead and visit all your favorite shops and take in all the lights to avoid having to go back.

All this being said, everyone should experience Times Square at least once. Being in the middle of it all really makes you feel something special, especially if you do it right.

Great tips! I love the tip about wearing the backpack in the front and about not stopping to watch random shows on the road especially standing in front. Yes, getting pictures taken with the ‘near naked man’ and ‘mickey mouse’ on the road will cost some dollars! Thanks for the tips.:-)

I completely agree with these statements, especially the people in costumes. We learned this the hard way, and they can be pretty pushy! Times Square is definitely a one-and-done place to visit. 🙂
