Hang Gliding Over Tennessee: Lookout Mountain Flight Park Review

This past weekend, I had the chance to go hang gliding near Chattanooga, Tennessee at Lookout Mountain Flight Park. It was such an awesome opportunity that I cannot recommend enough. Here is the full breakdown of what the experience was like:

Where is Lookout Mountain Flight Park?

Address: 7201 Scenic Highway Rising Fawn, GA

Lookout Mountain actually spans across both Georgia and Tennessee, so it is pretty easy to go back and forth between the two states when driving around. If you are driving up from Georgia, you will likely have to cross the Tennessee border before getting to the park. This specific address is for their office building, and it is not where you will be hang gliding. Here is just where you get a little more information and sign the necessary paper work. There is also a gift shop as well as some snacks and drinks. After signing the waivers, you will be directed to the hang gliding location.

How high up in the air do you go at Lookout Mountain Flight Park?

When purchasing your hang gliding ticket, you have the choice between going up 1500 feet in the air and 3000 feet in the air. We opted for the 1500 feet experience as it was cheaper and a little less nerve wracking. To reach these altitudes, you are pulled behind a small plane as opposed to running off the mountain.

How much does hang gliding cost at Lookout Mountain Flight Park?

For the tandem hang gliding experience at Lookout Mountain Flight Park, the cost depends on how high up you want to go. If you choose the 1500 feet option, it will cost you $200. If you wish to go 3000 feet in the air, it costs you $300. When I went, they were having a Valentine’s Day sale that discounted each flight by $50, so the cost was only $150 each. Therefore, be on the lookout for any sales going on!

If you want to purchase photos and videos from your flight, that will come at an additional cost. For both photos and videos, it costs $50.

What to expect when hang gliding at Lookout Mountain Flight Park:

After you have arrived at the actual hang gliding field, you will wait on attendants to bring you over to a lil gazebo area where they will go over some extra safety precautions and ask you to finish filling out the last part of the waiver. They will then get you in a harness and helmet and hand you your flight license.

Once you are suited up, you will get attached to the hang glider along with your tandem partner. They will go over some flight tips and ensure that you are ready to go. When I went, my tandem partner was Rich, and he was a super nice guy. The staff at this location really made the experience for me.

To takeoff, you are pulled behind a small airplane until you have reached the desired altitude, at this point you will detach from the plane and continue soaring for a few minutes. For me, the takeoff was really smooth, but my boyfriend had a bit of a rougher time. It seems to depend on how the wind is behaving when it’s your turn. Overall the time in air is maybe around 8-10 minutes. During this time, you will get amazing views of the mountains and land below you from a bird’s perspective. After detaching from the plane, the flight is much quieter which I really liked.

The landing was the part I was the most anxious about. I was really thankful that we were going to be landing on wheels, so I wouldn’t have to worry about trying to run correctly. It ended up being super easy and smooth, so I couldn’t be happier.

Hang Gliding Safety:

Throughout this whole process, I really felt like I was in great hands. Everyone seemed very knowledgeable and passionate about what they were doing which I always love to see. Something that eased my mind a little before taking off was knowing that we did have a parachute available if something were to happen. Obviously, hang gliding can be dangerous as it is unnatural for us humans to be so high up in the air. However, when the correct precautions are taken, you definitely feel a lot better about it, so thank you to the staff of Lookout Mountain Flight Park for making this experience as comfortable as possible. Just listen to what they tell you to do at all times.

Overall, I had an amazing time hang gliding at Lookout Mountain, and I would highly recommend any thrill seekers to try it out yourself. Afterwards, spend some time in Chattanooga, Tennessee as it is such a fun city with lots to do.
