Hippie Hole in Alabama: The Perfect Swimming Hole Getaway

If you’re looking for a swimming hole that fulfills your desires of relaxing, hiking, swimming, and jumping into the water from high places, Hippie Hole in Fort Payne, Alabama can provide. This swimming hole feels like it is straight out of a teen summer movie, and that is always a plus for me.

How To Get To Hippie Hole

Hippie Hole, technically named Martha’s Falls, is located in Fort Payne, Alabama, and it is a part of the Little River Canyon. There are several parking areas off Highway 35, and they have signs that make them easier to spot. Depending on how busy the area is, you may have to park in overflow parking. While there used to be a parking lot much closer to the swimming hole itself, you now have to park at the Little River Canyon Falls Park or the Little River Canyon Center.

The Hike to Hippie Hole

The hike from Little River Canyon Falls Park to Hippie Hole is around 3/4 of a mile. For the most part, this hike is very easy. There are a few points where it looks as though the trail breaks off into other directions, but as long as you stay on the main path, you will arrive at Hippie Hole. Once you reach the end of the hike, you are faced with a steep decline on stone-cut stairs. While this can be a bit intimidating, it is doable. Once you leave the swimming hole, the hike up the stairs is much more demanding, but I believe it is worth it.

The Canyon

Once you have reached your destination, you will be met with a beautiful canyon and cool waters. Here you can swim, sunbathe on the rocks, or jump from small cliffs. Overall it is a great place to hang out with friends, explore a canyon, or maybe even have a picnic. It can be crowded over the Summer, especially on holidays, so if you don’t like crowds, you might want to try to pick a random weekday to visit Hippie Hole!

Safety: Be cautious, as the rocks can be slippery when wet, and you should always make yourself aware of how deep the water is before you jump in!

Also, always be kind enough to pick up all of your trash before leaving the area!
